ABA provides a structured environment where students learn skills that will help them in school and everyday life. Students in Department 1 are given access to this intensive approach to learning for two sessions a week over approximately three years. Each ABA program is individually tailored to the specific needs of the child.
In ABA, the delivery is consistent and the language simple; providing the ideal conditions for autistic children to learn and develop. ABA involves delivering an instruction, a response (correct or not), and reinforcement (positive or negative). Reinforcement is an important aspect of ABA. Positive reinforcement encourages the student to perform to the best of their ability and makes the ABA learning process an enjoyable experience.
ABA is also useful in managing difficult behaviours, develops fine and gross motor abilities, nurtures imaginative play, promotes language skills and extends focus, as well as time on task. Our ultimate objective is the generalisation of skills attained through the ABA stages of acquired learning; being able to transfer the knowledge gained in ABA into useful life skills.
